                                       NUMBER SYSTEM

                          Improper and Mixed Fractions

Improper Fractions:

Improper fraction =   .

Example: 1

Convert  into an improper fraction.

Solution:

Improper fraction =

                         =

                             =

                             =

Hence,  =

                                    Mixed Fractions:

          =

Example: 2

Convert  into a mixed fraction.

Solution:

          =

                                      6 +  = 6

Hence,    = 6  .

                          Addition of mixed fractions

Example: 3

Find the sum of 5   and 3  .

Solution:

Given, 5   and 3  .

First we add the whole numbers:

                           5 + 3 = 8

Then add the fraction:

                        +  =

                            =

Hence, 5  + 3   =  .

Example: 4

Add 3  + 7  .

Solution:

             3  + 7    = 3+7+ ( )

                             = 10+ )

                             =10 +

                             =10 +

                            = 10

Hence, 3  + 7  = 10  .

                        Subtraction of mixed fractions

Example: 5

Subtract 7  from 12  .

Solution:

       Here 7 < 12 and  <  .

So we proceed as follows:

We convert the mixed fraction into improper fraction and then subtract.

 7  =    =

And 12  =     =

Common multiple of 6 and 8 is 24.

Now,  =  =

           =  =

             -  =  -

                     =

                     = 5

Hence, 7  - 12  = 5
