Prime Minister inaugurates phase-I of SAUNI
project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has
inaugurated the first phase of the Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Yojna (SAUNI) in Gujarat. The project aimed to solve the water problems
of a parched Saurashtra area.
The project involves laying 1,125 km of pipeline, which carries the water of Narmada River to the 115 dams in the
Saurashtra Region and irrigate 4.13 lakh hectares of land.
About SAUNI yojana.
- The SAUNI project involves making pipe canals instead of traditional canal was launched in 2012 by then Chief minister of Gujarat Shri Narendra Modi.
- The project involves in filling up 115 dams in the Saurashtra region with excess water from the Narmada River with the cost of Rs12,000 crore.
- SAUNI is a linking Project where the water will be filled in irrigation dams which are already has canal network, from there various canals will help channel water to farms.
- The project will benefit nearly 10,22,589 acres of farming land once the project is completed.
